Citing Your Sources and Paraphrasing

It is your responsibility to give proper credit to the sources you use for a research project.  To do this you must use a specific style for citation.  The majority of teachers at BHS require the MLA style guide format.  See the information below to help you with citing your sources

Web Sites that Offer Support for Creating Works Cited Pages:

These sites offer support for creating MLA (and other citation formats) parenthetical citations and building Works Cited pages.

Easy Bib requires registering with an email address. Advantage: You can store citations.

The Purdue Online Writing Lab - Offers extensive information about citation and beyond.

Paraphrasing - Use the following parts of speech to help you put an author's words into your own:

  • Synonyms (Example: "The hardest language to learn is Mandarin."  Change to: "Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to master.")
  • Antonyms (Example: "Lincoln was very tall."  Change to: Lincoln was not short.")
  • Phrasal verbs (Example: "Nuclear waste was discarded into a metal drum."  Change to: "Nuclear waste was thrown away in a round, sealed, metal container.")
  • Phrases (Example: "Many people in Canada are bilingual."  Change to: "Many Canadians speak two languages.")
